In cooperation with Free Icecream‘s Simon Johnson, Tacit Dimension created games for and with stage 3+ autonomous buses to explore machine intelligence, care, and algorithmic agency. It took place in the private road network of the Charité hospital campus in Berlin Mitte, where the Berlin public transport company (Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe, BVG) operated one of its prototype autonomous bus services. The human gameplay was organised around a metal frame (with the same footprint as the autonomous buses) equipped with proximity sensors.
Catch the Bus was commissioned by the Fiction Forum, a 2019 initiative of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, with the mission to make visible creative industries’ economic, societal and innovative impact.
Game design and reflection about designerly explorations of algorithmic intelligence in the context of the more-than-human can be read in the publication Bedö, V. (2021) ‘Catch the Bus: Probing Other-Than-Human Perspectives in Design Research’, Frontiers in Computer Science, 3, p. 636107. Available at: https://doi.org/10.3389/fcomp.2021.636107.
