As Open Knowledge Foundation Germany’s and Stromnetz Berlin’s community partner, Tacit Dimension introduced the method of rapid street game design as a prototyping method for the Energyhack 2015. The hackathon’s focus was on blackouts, elongated power cuts that cause infrastructure shutdowns where restarting infrastructure is costly or requires repairs.
Embedded in one of the teams, we created a 15-minute street game for in-situ testing of an SMS-based critical resource-sharing protocol during a blackout. The team based this response on expert insight that, in the case of a blackout, the GSM network can remain up for 5-20 minutes longer even when internet service is already down.
